POLICE COAST GUARD COMMISSIONING CEREMONY FOR NEXT-GENERATION PATROL CRAFT

The next-generation patrol craft from the Police Coast Guard (PCG) were commissioned on Thursday, 30 June 2022 by Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, at PCG Brani Base. A total of three types of patrol craft were introduced, namely the 5th Generation PT class patrol craft, 3rd Generation PJ class patrol craft and 3-Series PC class patrol craft.

Enhancements in PCG’s Capabilities to Handle the Complex Maritime Environment

The security threats to our maritime environment are complex and constantly evolving. With a porous coastline and a high volume of shipping traffic, Singapore is vulnerable to various maritime crimes, such as smuggling of illegal immigrants and contraband, and possible terrorist attacks. The introduction of the next-generation patrol craft is vital as it enhances PCG’s operational capabilities in safeguarding Singapore waters.

PCG has made several improvements to the new craft, mainly in the areas of design, speed, and using technologically advanced equipment to increase their effectiveness in detecting and neutralising maritime threats. The 5th Generation PT class patrol craft, 3-Series PC class patrol craft and 3rd Generation PJ class interceptors are part of PCG’s ongoing efforts to renew and upgrade its operational capabilities. The new craft will form an integral part of PCG’s fleet across all bases. A total of 42 new patrol craft of three different boat types will be deployed in Singapore waters.

Capabilities of 5th Generation PT Class Patrol Craft

The 5th Generation PT class patrol craft replaces the 3rd Generation PT class patrol craft which is deployed in the southern region. The 4th Generation PT class, which was commissioned in 2015, will continue to be deployed for operations. The 5th Generation PT class patrol craft is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 55 knots (100 km/hr). It is designed for maritime security and interdiction operations. Its features include waterjet propulsion for speed manoeuvrability, optimised hull form design to improve hydrodynamic performance and seakeeping, and improved sensors for surveillance and navigation. Each of the 5th Generation PT class patrol crafts is also armed with a remote weapon system and is fitted with ballistic protection. The 5th Generation PT class patrol craft will be deployed in the southern regions (Gul and Brani Regional Bases).

Capabilities of 3-Series PC Class Patrol Craft

The 3-Series PC class patrol craft will replace the 2-Series PC class patrol craft deployed in the northern region. The 3-Series PC class patrol craft is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 50 knots (90km/hr). It commands a new design in improving interception operations, vessel boarding, rescue and recovery. Its key features include an outboard propulsion system for high performance and ease of maintenance, proven hull form for manoeuvrability and seakeeping, and an ergonomic design with shock mitigating seats to alleviate fatigue and improve crew safety. The 3-Series PC class patrol craft will be deployed in the northern regions (Loyang and Lim Chu Kang Regional Bases).

Capabilities of 3rd Generation PJ Class Interceptor

The 3rd Generation PJ class interceptor will replace the 2nd Generation PJ interceptor deployed by PCG Special Task Squadron. The 3rd Generation PJ class interceptor is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 55 knots (100 km/hr) and is designed to engage aggressive and fast-moving sea borne threats. Its main features include surveillance sensors for navigation and detection, reinforced hull to support rugged and complex operations, and ruggedised fenders along the hull body for force-boarding operations involving non-compliant craft.

Reinforcing PCG’s Mission

Head of Operations and Security from Police Coast Guard, Superintendent of Police Chong Ying Ming Elvis said, “Maritime security can be very complex as we are subjected to numerous challenges such as the evolving modus operandi of our adversaries, constant uncertainties in the sea state and the prevailing weather conditions. The Police Coast Guard needs to be a step ahead in the way we transform to achieve our mission of deterring, detecting and responding to crime in Singapore waters. The new patrol craft not only enable our officers to carry out their duties more effectively, but also enhance their confidence, skills and safety in responding to these challenges.”

Protecting Singapore Waters

The commissioning of PCG’s next-generation patrol craft marks another milestone in PCG’s operational readiness as we continue to safeguard our territorial waters.
