Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to China from 30 to 31 March 2021

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan made a working visit to Fujian, China from 30 to 31 March 2021. Minister Balakrishnan met and was hosted to dinner by PRC State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi. Minister Balakrishnan also had a meeting with Secretary of the Communist Party of China Fujian Provincial Committee Yin Li.


Minister Balakrishnan and State Councilor Wang reaffirmed the strong ties between Singapore and China, and the robust bilateral cooperation in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Balakrishnan welcomed China’s proposal on the mutual recognition of health certificates for cross-border travel. They also reviewed their respective national vaccination rollout plans. The Ministers also took stock of progress since last year’s 16th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, including on facilitating greater air connectivity.


Minister Balakrishnan and State Councilor Wang exchanged views on regional and international developments and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation. They welcomed the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations this year. They also discussed the tragic situation in Myanmar, and expressed alarm over the recent escalation in violence and the continued use of lethal force by Myanmar security forces against demonstrators. The Ministers called for a de-escalation of the situation, a cessation of violence and the commencement of constructive dialogue among all sides.


Minister Balakrishnan and Party Secretary Yin reaffirmed the long-standing people-to-people and cultural ties between Singapore and Fujian. They noted the historical economic links between Singapore, Fujian and Southeast Asia, including Fujian’s role as an important starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. They agreed to strengthen ties between Singapore and Fujian and deepen economic cooperation.
