Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan delivered Singapore’s national statement at the General Debate of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 26 September 2020.
In the national statement, delivered via video message, Minister Balakrishnan outlined the threats to the multilateral system that have been accelerated by COVID-19 and the pitfalls of protectionism. A rules-based multilateral system that ensures stability in inter-state relations remains critical for the survival of small states such as Singapore. Minister Balakrishnan also underscored the importance of supporting international and multilateral institutions that play critical roles in formulating responses to COVID-19 and preparing for a global recovery. By working together, the international community will have better odds of finding solutions to issues such as vaccine development and free trade as well as increase our resilience in anticipation of future challenges.
