Establishment of Singapore-Malaysia Special Working Committee on COVID-19

Singapore welcomes the statement issued by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir. Hasni Mohammad following the telephone conversation on 17 March 2020 between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to establish a Singapore-Malaysia Special Working Committee on COVID-19.

Prime Minister Lee spoke to Prime Minister Muhyiddin to discuss Malaysia’s Movement Control Order in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to coordinate the measures that both countries are taking to respond to this common threat.

Prime Minister Lee and Prime Minister Muhyiddin reaffirmed the close interdependence and strong economic and people-to-people links between Singapore and Malaysia. Prime Minister Lee welcomed Prime Minister Muhyiddin’s reassurance that the flow of goods and cargo, including food and essential supplies, will continue uninterrupted for the mutual benefit of our peoples.

Both leaders agreed to establish the Singapore-Malaysia Special Working Committee on COVID-19. The Committee will be co-chaired by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, and Malaysian Senior Minister and Minister of Defence Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni. The Special Working Committee will propose and coordinate a joint mitigation plan to ensure the safe and sustainable movement of people, goods, and services between Malaysia and Singapore.
