The Police have arrested a 65-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of snatch theft.
On 14 October 2019 at about 12.35pm, the Police received a report from a woman that her gold necklace was snatched away by an unknown man along Commonwealth Ave.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV footages, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 16 October 2019.
The man will be charged in court on 18 October 2019 with snatch theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries an imprisonment term of not less than one year and not more than 7 years, and caning.
Members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures against snatch theft:
Always be alert and attentive to your surroundings. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a more crowded area or call the Police to seek help;
Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large sums of cash;
Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. If you are carrying a handbag, sling it in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times; and
When on the streets, carry your handbag on the side that is away from moving traffic.
